Parliament, Houses of
There is said to have been a royal palace at Westminster during the reign of Cnut where the present Houses of Parliament are to be found. In any event, a palace was created by Edward the Confessor and extended by William the Conqueror, remaining in use until destroyed by fire in 1512. The Commons met in St Stephen's Chapel from the late 1540s. In 1834 fire destroyed the whole palace, after which the buildings we are familiar with were designed and built by Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. -
